Who can be a Host family???

Host families come in all shapes and sizes and represent the diversity of American culture. Our families are of varied economic, religious and racial backgrounds and include:

  • Working Parents
  • Couples without children
  • Singles and Single Parents
  • Adoptive Parents
  • Empty Nesters
  • Home School families

Host families are Expected to... 

  • Be a welcoming and open-minded family
  • Treat their student as a member of the family, not as a guest
  • Share established reasonable family rules and chores
  • To guide their student in learning throughout the experience
  • Talk often with the students counselor at school
  • Discuss any questions and concerns with the program representative
  • Share your American culture and lifestyle with your student
  • Show an Interest in learning about your students culture
  • Include your student in your family and community activities
  • What is Expected from the host family

  • A separate bed, can share the room with same sex family member within 5 years of age
  • Provide a quiet place to study, most students enjoy learning the American way
  • Three home meals with the family, two on school days
  • Some local transportation, encourage students to make friends
  • Open communication, encouragement and sound advice
  • Treatment as a member of the family (chores, rules, privileges)
  • What is Expected of the Exchange Student

    • Adjust to the lifestyle of the host family
    • Be flexible, adaptable, and positive
    • Be a responsible and caring member of the family
    • Attend school regularly and show consistent effort
    • Share his/her culture and customs with hosts and community
    • Participate fully in family, community and school activities
    • Open communication and commitment to the program
    • Show respect for the host culture
    • Experience opportunities for community service


    What to Expect from your Area Representative

  • Advocate for the program in the local community
  • Interview host families and verify personal references
  • Match students and families with similar interests
  • Administer and monitor school admissions
  • Meet/greet and orient new students and families
  • Clarify expectations and uncover misunderstandings
  • Provide ongoing support and advice
