Who can be a Host family???
Host families come in all shapes and sizes and represent the diversity of American culture. Our families are of varied economic, religious and racial backgrounds and include:
- Working Parents
- Couples without children
- Singles and Single Parents
- Adoptive Parents
- Empty Nesters
- Home School families
Host families are Expected to...
Be a welcoming and open-minded family
Treat their student as a member of the family, not as a guest
Share established reasonable family rules and chores
To guide their student in learning throughout the experience
Talk often with the students counselor at school
Discuss any questions and concerns with the program representative
Share your American culture and lifestyle with your student
Show an Interest in learning about your students culture
Include your student in your family and community activities
What is Expected from the host family
A separate bed, can share the room with same sex family member within 5 years of age
Provide a quiet place to study, most students enjoy learning the American way
Three home meals with the family, two on school days
Some local transportation, encourage students to make friends
Open communication, encouragement and sound advice
Treatment as a member of the family (chores, rules, privileges)
What is Expected of the Exchange Student
- Adjust to the lifestyle of the host family
- Be flexible, adaptable, and positive
- Be a responsible and caring member of the family
- Attend school regularly and show consistent effort
- Share his/her culture and customs with hosts and community
- Participate fully in family, community and school activities
- Open communication and commitment to the program
- Show respect for the host culture
- Experience opportunities for community service
What to Expect from your Area Representative
Advocate for the program in the local community
Interview host families and verify personal references
Match students and families with similar interests
Administer and monitor school admissions
Meet/greet and orient new students and families
Clarify expectations and uncover misunderstandings
Provide ongoing support and advice
